I. Dedication Let me tell you about my book. It is a guide book, but a guide book of very différent sort. It is not just about a city I have studied, but about a city I love. Consequently it is written not in the usuai detached style but very much from my heart. Also the tone of my book often changes back and forth between serious and light. This is because while I certainly wanted to share the many delightful stories about the daily lives of past and present residents of Budapest, I also wanted to make some serious points about how a city can develop, be destroyed and be rebuilt again, thus showing something of the workings of history itself. I hope you will enjoy my serious yet playful book and I hope even more that after we have finished our walk together you will forever have something of my city in your heart.
