F OREWORD
When I took up the proofs of Mr. Ortzen's book, I thought I knew the Loire Valley inside out. I soon discovered my mistake.
Though it is a region I have often visited, I learnt of skele-tons in closets, beauties in boudoirs, knights in gardens which I had overlooked—and this tempted me to go back soon. I hope these 180 fact-packed pages will have the same effect on other readers.
Once such a decision has been taken, Mr. Ortzen sets out the practical details in a way the seasoned traveller will approve. Not only will his advice prove invaluable for plan-ning a journey to the Loire Valley but alsó, on arrival, en-sure fuü enjoyment from a well-guided visit, whether interest lies in good living and fine scenery or historical and cultural attractions.
For the Loire Valley is not just a lovely camping ground —they called it the "Garden of Francé"—it is alsó steeped in history/and the charms that made it popular with bygone kings and lords are still very much alive today.
