PREFACE
Chemicals that injure or cause toxicity to the cardiac system have been known for some time. However, toxicologists have not explored the deleterious effects of drugs on this organ system to the same extent as they have the toxicology of organs such as the liver, lungs, kidneys, or brain. Scientists from other disciplines have well documented that specific chemicals could exert their primary toxicity on the heart. Several books, one edited by Dr. Evart Van Stee, and several volumes edited by Dr. Tibor Balazs, have documented that the cardiovascular organ system can serve as a site for toxic manifestations of chemicals.
This book attempts to further introduce the principles of cardiovascular toxicology to students, clinicians, and scientists who are trying to gain an understanding of drugs and/or chemicals that may introduce undesired effects by attacking cardiac or vascular tissues.
The authors are greatly indebted to the colleagues who provided invaluable assistance by providing library citations needed to make this text a well-referenced source for cardiovascular toxins.
The editor gives thanks to those in the Society of Toxicology who suggested that this project be undertaken, to Drs. Michael Dunn and Harry Salem who provided encouragement as the text started to take form, to the authors of the chapters who gave of their knowledge, effort, and spirit, and to Dr. Patrick Kelly of Telford Press who brought organization to make this book a reality.
Those of us who are involved in this area of research express our admiration for Dr. Balazs. He has made a well-recognized contribution to toxicological research.
