Introduction
Quilting is tine stitcliing together of three layers: a top layer of pieced-together fabrics, a middle layer of batting and a fabric lining underneath. Historically, quilting has been a woman's domain. Quiltmakers made quilts with practical purposes in mind. In an era when nothing was wasted, they recycled scraps of cloth or worn clothing into useful quilts. Drawing inspiration from family life and the environment, women used their imaginations and fine sewing skills to design quilts that ultimately raised their techniques to an art form. To symbolize unity, for example, they quilted scrolled ropes of entwined knots around quilt borders. Young giris fashioned quilts for their "hope chests," weaving dreams into their motifs. Gathered around table-sized quilting frames, whole communities of women worked on quilting projects while sharing laughter and stories.
