Medieval mystique
Founded in the 8th century, Fez is the most beautiful and well-preserved medieval city in the Islamic world. For many centuries, it was the commercial, cultural and religious heart of Morocco. Now, with its many fine mosques and palaces, flourishing souks and bazaars, Fez still has the mystique of an ancient Arab capital.
The historic Palais Jamai Hotel is in the centre of the old city, overlooking the valley of Fez. Built in 1879 by the Grand Vizir to the Sultan, it typifies traditional Moorish architecture. The lavish rooms are decorated in Moroccan cedar and painted with classic geometric motifs. Bounded by an impressive Andalusian garden with several fountains and terraces, the hotel is a peaceful retreat, despite its proximity to the hustle and bustle of the Medina - the walled city.
The fascinating sights of Fez are best visited on foot. Palais Jamai guests can walk down twisting narrow alleys lined with tiny shops selling carpets, sequined slippers, fabrics, leatherwork, jewellery and spices. The alleys also lead to some of Fez's most famous monuments, such as the great Kairaouiine Mosque, the focus of religious life in Morocco. Book to pack: "Morocco" by Pierre Loti
