IntroductionAfter a decade of living with our ninety-five-year-old master bath, I felt I was ready to take the plunge. I was ready to renovate. After ail, my husband Kevin and I had, with relatively few headaches, renovated our kitchen. If nothing else, we had learned that the best wayin fact, I believe the only wayto approach any renovation is just to dig in and do as much research as possible, as far in advance as possible. I could certainly do that.Although we do have more bathrooms in our home today than I did in the house I grew up in (with a family of eleven, we would line up outside the bathroom to brush our teeth before school),our original master bath was very much of the preWorld War I genresmall and not built for comfort. In fact, to be generous, it was teeny to a fault, linked to our bedroom by a cramped dressing room. If I had one requisite in mind when I began this project, it was to be able to lie in the bath of my dreams in the evenings and gaze out at the moon and the stars. That was number one on my wish list. My husband, on the other hand, had more pressing needs, such as a shower with a built-in mirrored shaving niche and plenty of shelf space.
