To the ReaderAfter twelve years of intensive dependency prevention efforts practiced for and with young people and adults, two reasons for writing this book have emerged: To encourage a multifaceted approach to primary dependency prevention in our society and to ürge interested teachers, educators and parents to help youngsters and adults cope with life without abusing drugs.This book is purposely divided into two parts: Part One is intended for par-ticipants in local and national prevention programs and their instructors; Part Two is for teachers and members of educational communities. The book con-veys the importance and urgency of incorporating a coordinated, multifaceted approach into all individual programs. For these reasons, both parts of the book are interrelated.The Global ApproachThe primary dependency prevention program of the model Germán Speaking Community has existed since 1979. All participants agreed from the beginn-ing that only a multifaceted approach could make the realization of this project possible.Six working groups were förmed to organize prevention activities in the various community environments: School, home, workplace, and during leisure time. For three years these working groups have coordinated their programs with in the framework of a "Central Coordination Team". The activities of this team have proven that coordination is indispensable for reaching a specific population and influencing their traditions and lifestyles.The many inquires received about this global dependency prevention approach demonstrate that today many health education officials perceive a real need for this approach.The various chapters of Part One of this book strive to convince colleagues in education of the feasibility of the multifaceted approach, provided they are really interested.
