DECOUPAGE
introduction
^Ka^^ ^ dictionary definition of decoupage is the cutting out and application of
paper cut-outs to surfaces. The process is very simple and intensely relaxing. I can
easily see why decoupage became a pastime for genteel young ladies as it is
similar in its intricacy to working a delicate embroidery. I recently attended a
course and it was so enjoyable working in a group where moments of talk, when ' " eg,
- ' we all showed each other our work in progress, were interspersed with long
periods of calm as we quietly snipped and stuck down our decoupage images. The wonderful part about decoupage is that you can pick it up and put it down easily, and that even if you and a friend start with the same designs you wiU both end up creating something with a different feel.
A lot of the designs for decoupage are based on heavy floral designs of the Victorian era. These have their place but you should not feel constrained by them because you can use any type of paper and a whole range of images. In this book we have brought decoupage right up-to-date and have taken decoupage in its broader view. With over 20 projects for every area of your home, we have used different materials from black and white prints and reproductions of famous paintings to colour photocopies of flowers and interesting shapes cut out of coloured papers. There are also many interesting paint techniques involved in the projects. There are clear step-by-step instructions showing how to decorate your walls, furniture and accessories. Start by simply creating a door plaque with motifs from wrapping paper. You will then be ready to tackle the larger projects such as the stool which is transfromed with multi-coloured squares of hand-made paper. To help you there are complete materials and techniques sections.
I hope this book inspires you to take up your scissors. I can promise you that once you have started, the sheer delight of quietly snipping away will take over your hfe.
