There is nothing surprising about this - we are creatures of habit after all, primed to seek instant gratification. Sadly, though, the backlash of frustration and despair as the weight piles back on can drive us straight into the dreaded yo-yo cycle until, scoffing and starving in turn, we end up weighing more than we did to begin with.This has given rise to the fallacy that dieting makes you fat. It doesn't. Permanent weight loss eludes usbecause of the faulty methods we choose for shedding unwanted excess weight. Inevitably, as hunger pangs set in and we start to miss favourite foods, temptation becomes impossible to resist. Add low self-esteem and a secret conviction that we'll never really lose weight, and we set ourselves up to fail.UNDERSTANDING 'OVERWEIGHT'To lose weight, we have to use up more energy than we take in from food. For many of us, this means watching what we eat - avoiding comfort snacks and cutting down on sugary and fatty foods - and becoming more physically active. But for some very overweight people, even the strictest diet has little effect. Certainly, most studies have failed to show that obese people eat more than those of normal weight, leading researchers to look at factors other than diet to account for unmovable fat.Recent findings blame genetic makeup for as much as 80 per cent of the variation in body fat content that exists between different people.
