PrefaceAs the smoke from many motors fills the air and hides the view from the patio - and water from the faucet becomes a mixture devised by the chemical industry increasing numbers of urban dwellers are seeking in the mountains and deserts the space, clean air and clean water denied them at home. Some travelers are content to view the passing landscape from an automobile window, and to see more country in less time. A growing number prefer to go on foot into the wilderness and wild areas, taking food and shelter on the backs of pack stock, or carrying it in packs on their own backs. The latter we know as knapsackers or backpackers, a breed which has increased rapidly within the Sierra Club and other outing organizations during recent years.Pack boards originally frames of wood on which blankets, food and clothing were lashed - were used by trappers and other early adventurers into the wilderness.
