I' ; , I', 111 'i! I, ' l I I'I. '.sii Introduction This book is about creating a marriage of house and garden. It is about extending die scents, colours, textures and sounds of outdoors inside, and taking the social and family life of die home, eadng and entertaining, out of doors. Garden rooms, with tlieir large windows, doors opening onto the terrace or garden, liigli roofs and bold architectural features, can be strikingly different to the rest of the home. The constracdon, even if in tradidonal style, is an essentially modern concept, with large areas of glass replacing solid walls to let in light and a sense of the garden outside. Over time, garden rooms have developed a distinct style using the structural elements of the building, and textures of stone, brick and stucco, combined with the natural worid of plants and flowers, the sun and the stars. Garden rooms offer an environment both stylish and practical, for a relaxed way ofliving suited to contemporaiy life.It is an important room for me, and 1 have always had a consei-vatoiy on my various houses, sometimes small, somedmes large, but usually close to the kitchen. For me, the garden room is also a place in which to work at home peacefiJly, surrounded by the diings I love.
