I have always believed homes should be planned for happy living and that, because no two families have an identical lifestyle, requirements, or the same budget, every home will be a highly individual unit, planned, designed and decorated to suit those who are going to live in ItThis drive to individuality can be seen clearly in a row of terraced houses, all built to the same design. As soon as new owners move into one of the houses, it takes on an entirely different look from the house next door, both inside and out, as the new owners plan rooms, choose colour schemes, select furniture and furnishings, and plant the garden to suit themselves.'Nest building' is the current buzzword used to describe this phenomenon - I prefer to call it creative homemaking. For at least 100 years there has been plenty of help and advice available for would-be home-makers from the publication of august tomes such as Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management through to the more recent proliferation of specialist and non-specialist magazines and supplements, to say nothing of television programmes all devoted to different aspects of interior design, decoration, furnishings and garden planning.Today there is much more to the art, science and craft of homemaking than in previous decades.
