In his celebrated book Ett hem, the illustrator Carl Larsson (1853-1919) describes how he discovered his house in Dalccarlia on making a detour by way of Sundhorn, where his father-in-law's two sisters were living on a small farm called Lilla Hyt-tnas. On the spot, Larsson decided to leave the noisy city and move into an environment where the beauty of nature was all around him. In a letter written to his wife Karin in 1903, he describes the first moments he spent at Lilla Hyttnas: "Do you know, those first minutes I spent in our litde house were so delicious: I lit all the lamps, inspected every corner and opened all the doors. I truly believe that we have created something beautiful." The Larssons did indeed make their house into a work of art, and their day-to-day existence was no different. Everything around them - furniture, objects, colours - became special. The thousands who visit their "worid" today and recognise each detail that Carl so painstakingly illustrated, can readily identify the motto placed over the door: "Welcome, friend, to the house of Carl Larsson and his wife".
