Since its beginning more than 100 years ago, Mayo Clinic has existed to offer, to both the sick and the well, comprehensive medical care of the highest standard through a coordinated and integrated group practice of medicine. Through the years, we have been privileged to serve more than 4 million individuals who have sought health care at Mayo facilities in Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; and Scottsdale, Arizona. Annually, we welcome over 300,000 patients from around the world.
The goal of Mayo Clinic programs in medical education and medical research is to contribute to improved standards of medical care and a broader understanding of health and disease. Traditionally, such new knowledge has been shared with health care professionals through medical journals, textbooks, and seminars.
For Mayo, this book—a comprehensive medical guide for direct use by the public—marks a significant new step in an expanding health information program that began in 1983. All of us at Mayo hope that you will enjoy Mayo CHnic Family Health Book for years to come and will use it often as a source of authoritative health information.
