Introductiony happiest childhood memories are of playing in my grandparents' home. Creativity was always encouraged, and I was incredibly fortunate to grow up with an extended family of very imaginative people. I would make booksfrom scraps of paper, mould soft soap into dolly baths for my doll's house or draw paper dolls on a tray, sat at one end of the table while my grandmother sewed wedding dresses for a living at the other end. With the encouragement of my grandparents, I spent many happy hours turning shoe boxes into doll's houses. I moulded doll's house food from plasticine and my grandmother would watch over me as I stood at the stove cooking up clay or placing trays of salt and flour dough models in the oven to bake. I made fairy rings in the garden decorated with charms, flowers and leaves, and spent hours fiddling around in my grandfather's workshop hammering bits of driftwood and left-over bits and pieces into boats, cars or miniature furniture. When my children were growing up, I kept a 'useful box' full of suitable craft equipment and materials specifically for them to craft with. They loved it, and as long as I managed to keep the 'useful box' well stocked my craft materials were safe! This useful box contained left-over sheets of Christmas gift wrap, small boxes, plastic bottle tops (they make great wheels!), paints, felt-tip pens, crayons and pencils. When out shopping, I would purchase discounted craft materials, glitters and other odds and ends I thought might come in handy. Whenever I completed a 'work' project, the left-over bits and pieces would go into the 'useful box', too. I still save things, but now the bits and pieces get sent to my niece Scarlett.I hope you and your children enjoy the projects laid out in this book, but please encourage your children to use the ideas and techniques to create new designs. The best you can do for your children is to inspire them, encourage their endeavours and anything is possible! Success will build confidence, and confidence is one of the building blocks of a happy and successful life.I wish you many happy hours crafting with your children!
