PAPIER-MACHE
INTRODUCTION
The history of papier-mache stretches across the centuries and continents. It is one of the simplest and most inexpensive craft techniques, and with imagination anything can be created, from delicate bowls to pieces of furniture.
As a child I can remember messing around with paper and glue. I have no memory of what I made but I bet 1 ended up with a wobbly bowl created by plastering newspaper all over a balloon, the most exciting part being when 1 popped the balloon. Since then 1 have been constantly amazed by what can be made from papier-mache. 1 love the tactile nature of bowls made from pulp; they look so solid, and then you pick them up and they are so light. It just makes me want to cherish them so much.
In this book we show you, with clear step-by-step photography, how to create 23 papier-mache projects, from a practical magazine rack to a stylish candelabra. There is a comprehensive section on all of the basic materials and equipment you will need for the projects, plus useful techniques to cover every method, with tips on tearing newspaper, making your own pulp, using moulds and building your own armatures. Creating an object is one thing but it is the surface decoration that will turn it into a stunning piece for your home. We show you how to paint, gild, adorn with pebbles and even papier-mache with fabric.
1 hope this book inspires you to start collecting scraps of assorted papers and cardboard and to try out some of the stunning projects shown here.
