lention the word "outdoors" cind we conjure up imtiges of hiking across the countryside, camping in woods and forests, iioating on lakes and rivers, and swimming and sailing on the sea. It suggests fresh air and space to be oneself. Outdoors can also encompass situations more domestic and closer to home: the local |3ark, yoLir own garden, and even a patio or balcony for those of us who live in apartments in a city environment. The outdoors carries notions of well-being, relaxation, challenging recreational activities, and places that are free from day-to-day pressures.
The outdoors offers physical and emotional escape from the enclosures and boundaries that prescribe our activities and behavior, whether we etre at home, school, or work. I have always regarded it as the great release, the "breathe out." Watch children tumble out of class into the playground or from a bus on an outing—tiiey scjueai and roar and run with pleasure at the freedom. Even when our normal daily activities are happy and smooth-running, the outdoors offers a welcome recreational and relaxing change. But when life makes too many demands and we are desperate for relief from daily pressures, many of us like to take a brisk walk, work in the garden, or collapse on a beach, in short, we distance ourselves physically from the pressure and, in doing so, claw back a little space in whicli to assess and review our |)roblems. The old-fashioned remedy of stepping out to take the air is not unlike current medical advice for healthy living—to get |3lenty of fresii air and exercise. The fresh air blows the cobwebs away and encourages activities of a type that are usually enjoyable, and the element of fun in turn helps to relieve stress and the accompanying unattractive pliysical symptoms of our feist-track lifestyle.
The outdoors is a vital ingredient in a happy and licalthy life. Simple Outdoor Style looks at projects that can enhance our enjoyment of this wonderful natural resource in the spring and summer montlis.
