Foreword I am particularly pleased to introduce this book on allergy relief. It is indeed a complete, comprehensive, informative and very useful volume. After having spent more than 25 years in the study and practice of all aspects of allergy, I've found that a few words in print can often say more about allergy-and say it better-than an office consultation or even a lecture at a university or medical convention. Allergies are now so prevalent that they affect almost every household in the United States. Yet allergies are still a puzzle not only to those who suffer from the problem but alsó to many medical scientists, to the point where the word "allergy" itself is subject to debate. Treatment is even more controversial. Academic or "traditional" allergists limit diagnosis of allergy to a cluster of adverse reactions-asthma, hives, eczema, hay fever and so forth-related to definite, measurable changes in the immuné system and caused by a limited number of foods, inhalants or other known allergens. Other doctors (often called clinical ecologists) draw heavily on clinical observation and feel that allergy can affect not only breathing, skin and the digestive system, but possibly the nervous system, heart and blood vessels, muscles and joints, metabolism-indeed, almost every system in the body- and can be blamed on any of countless environmental factors. In fact, the medical problems related to allergy are continually taking new forms. At the same time, the methods of diagnosis and treatment of allergy are alsó changing. Yet this book presents the material in a clearly written, well-organized, easy to use formát. The carefully compiled information in this self-help book will certainly prove extremely valuable to anyone who either has allergies or suspects that they do. Many theories are presented and explained, but
