Foreword As this century comes to a close, health care providers are being overwhelmed by an ever growing number of patients who, because of chronic lack of energy, find themselves unable to fully engage in a meaningful life experience. It is perhaps this group of patients, more than any other, that poses the greatest challenge to the modern Western medical paradigm. The Newtonian billiard ball germ-theory model typically relied upon by Western medical science to explain our maladies quite clearly fails us when we are engaged by these patients to unravel their protean complaints. Patients who are chronically fatigued do not suffer from a specific disease entity. Medical students do not learn about chronic fatigue between the cancer and cystitis chapters of their medical books. That is because chronic fatigue is not an "it" like tuberculosis or bunions. What is so unique and perplexing about chronically fatigued patients are the incredibly varied roads they have taken to arrive at their Rome of disability. Herein lies one of the fundamental mysteries to understanding the chronically fatigued patient which is so well explored in these pages. Dr. Schmidt, in this book, first delineates and defines the various pathways leading to the condition of generalized fatigue, typically in association with immune dysfunction.
