Instant gratification being what it is, I began to focus on felting wool that was already knit-secondhand sweaters! Felt first, then sew. That's my philosophy, and it's the method you'll find throughout Warm Fuzzies. I'll show you how to felt thrift-store sweaters, then cut them up and sew them into warm and whimsical projects for the whole family. You'll find that using recycled materials is its own exercise in creativity. Taking on object out of context can teach us to see its underlying potential, adding a new dimension of beauty to whatever we create. For example, check out the Just Right Tote (page 118) to see how a striped sweater turns into a stylish bag. Or moke your own Cutie Pie Felt Bowls (page 80) with two simple circles and a handful ot felt balls. Sew up a pair of soft, warm mittens (page 114] with bits and pieces of cast-off sweaters in colors that will keep you happy during the cold, drab winter. Take your pick of the colorful projects inside Warm Fuzzies and explore the versatility ot felted wool. Wool is breathable and repels spills. Its elasticity allows for garments that are comfortable and hold their shape. And repurposing wool sweaters has an added advantage. I may be just a lazy knitter, but I like to think I am also honoring a commitment to living "green" by reusing old sweaters. You can feel good about using secondhand materials. especially if you buy them from a charity-based thrift store. As I developed the collection presented in this book, I focused on bringing fresh color combinations and elements of fun to the projects. Now it's up to you to express yourself through color choice and personal flair. I encourage you to seek out inspiration and to be in tune to it when it strikes. Take a break from routine. Slow down, smell the flowers, take a nap if necessary! It is the times when we are most relaxed and happy that the best ideas will come to us.
