INTRODUCTION1, Claudel and BarraultIn June 1939, Jean-Louis Barrault visited Claudel in Brangues, the poet's home in Savoie, for the express purpose of asking permission to produce three plays, not one of which had been performed professionally at that time. After naming the three titles: Tete d'Or, the earhest play, written when Claudel was twenty. Fartage de Midi, written after a personal crisis in the life of the poet when he was thirty-two, and Le Soulier de Satin, the last play, written when Claudel was in his fifties, Barrault was asked to explain the reasons for his choice. His answer demonstrated a good understanding of the three difficult texts. Tete d'Or, he said has the still unformed power of the later plays. Barrault used the image of sap: "Teie d'Or est votre seve." Fartage de Midi he called the trial or the test {répreuve) of the playwright. And Le Soulier he called the synthesis (votre synthese).
