Preface
The first edition oi Understanding Business was the most successfial new product introduced to the market in many years. It became one of the best-selling books in the field. Many instructors said that their students were never more excited by a textbook in their lives. They also said that students were coming to class prepared and eager to participate in discussions. The consensus was that the first edition was the most readable, most interesting introductory business text on the market.
Frank Falcetta at Middlesex Community College in Burlington, Maine, said: "In my 20 years of teaching I have had the opportunity to teach courses using many different textbooks; I can honestíy say that I have never used a textbook that is so student oriented and engaging." Robert Stivender at Wake Technical Community College said: "Bill's first edition was a classroom triumph. Students read it! For the first time in teaching 'intro' for six years, my students were prepared to discuss beyond the basics. Bill's book had prepared them for that." Such comments give authors the motivation to do more. And we havc done more! Understanding Business is not the number one book in sales. Other, more established books still maintain their leadership positions. They are fine books and we are proud just to be a competitor. But, like Avis, we are trying harder. We want to be number one because this course is one of the most important a student will ever take in school. We want to introduce more competition by offering a superior product. In this second edition, we set as our goal the production of tfie most up-to-date text, the most involving study guide, the most comprehensive test bank, the most useful and complete instructor's manual, the best color acetates, the most interesting and educational software projects (tutorials, simulations, and games), the best videotape library, and so on.
We have the pleasure of working with a new publisher because Times Mirror/ Mosby bought Richard D. Irwin, Inc. and added this text to the well-established business texts at Irwin. Irwin shares our goals and promises the resources needed to make the second edition number one.
